PB19 infection in immunodeficiency disorders

Acute parvovirus B19 infection produces erythema infectiosum in normal individuals or even pass as asymptomatic infection, but in immunocompromised patients with insufficient production of neutralizing antibody response due to persistent bone marrow insufficiency the infection may cause wide spectrum of clinical conditions varying from pure red cell aplasia, chronic anaemia, to transient aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic anaemia. Predisposing conditions include congenital immunodefeceincy syndrome, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, large granular lymphocyte leukaemia, acute and chronic myeloid leukaemia. Moreover, Parvovirus B19 may be an important opportunistic pathogen in all organ transplant recipients of heart, bone marrow, liver and kidneys and patients with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency syndromes including AIDS , lymphoproliferative disorders and other malignancies.
